A former head of Bolivia's special forces tasked with fighting drug trafficking has been extradited to the United States to face federal charges related to a cocaine importation conspiracy.
Maximiliano Davila-Perez, former Director of the Bolivia n Special Forces for the Fight Against Drug Trafficking ( FELCN ), has been extradited to the United States to face federal charges. He is accused of conspiring to import cocaine into the U.S. and conspiring to use and possess automatic weapons in connection with his alleged cocaine importation scheme. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York announced Davila-Perez’s extradition from Bolivia on Friday.
Previously, the U.S. Department of State offered a reward of up to $5 Million for information leading to his arrest. Davila-Perez headed Bolivia’s FELCN in 2019 under ex-president Evo Morales and was arrested in 2022 while attempting to flee to Argentina. He is also accused of money laundering. Davila-Perez appeared in the Southern District of New York federal court on Friday before Judge Robyn F. Tarnofsky. Prosecutors allege he exploited his position as Bolivia’s top narcotics official to further a large-scale cocaine trafficking operation, diverting resources away from investigating traffickers and providing armed FELCN officers as security for cocaine shipments. Davila-Perez is accused of partnering with large-scale cocaine suppliers who operated labs in Bolivia and agreed to ship over a thousand kilograms of Bolivian cocaine to New York. Recorded phone calls between November 2019 and February 2020, after he was removed from his official position, revealed continued arrangements for cocaine shipments
