Evo Morales, the former socialist president of Bolivia, is facing arrest warrants on charges of human trafficking and statutory rape. The investigation stems from evidence suggesting a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl during his presidency.
Morales, 65, a former socialist dictator who ruled Bolivia for four terms from 2006 to 2019, is facing accusations of human trafficking and statutory rape . He bypassed the two-term limit through dubious court rulings. Morales is currently involved in a power struggle with current socialist President Luis Arce.
Prosecutors reactivated an investigation against Morales in September, based on evidence found in Tarija, indicating a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl named Cindy Vargas in 2016. Vargas gave birth to a child at 16, and authorities found a birth certificate listing Morales as the father. Formal charges were filed against Morales after he refused to attend a summons for testimony. An arrest warrant was also issued for Vargas' mother, Idelsa Pozo Saavedra, for allegedly facilitating the relationship in exchange for political and other benefits. Vargas' father is currently in preemptive detention.
