Two creatives share how they've built their career and advocated for themselves financially.
When reflecting on Latina Equal Pay Day, Michelle Santana thought back to how she’s built a career for herself as a tattoo artist who got her start in Colombia and is now based in New York City.
Nydia Simone is an actress, writer, producer, and the founder of Blactina Media, a company that amplifies Afrolatinx and Caribbean stories through film, tv, and digital media. Simone has taken the lead on her own platforms to create awareness around pay disparity and how that particularly influences Afrolatinxs.
“Creating conversations around [pay parity] in addition to conferences dedicated to creating more pay equity [help],” shares Simone. “This year I attended a conference named Women of Color and Capital and it was all about making sure Women of Color were learning about the tools at our feet and I even met a few investors. It helped me to be less afraid to ask for big checks and learn all the different ways I could build capital even if it was investment capital.
