The fired Texas basketball coach is on the verge of being hired at Ole Miss despite his felony domestic violence charge, later dropped, that resulted in his ouster.
Travis County District Attorney Jose Garza on Feb. 15 moved to dismiss a felony domestic violence case against former Texas basketball coach Chris Beard, in part because of alleged victim's wishes not to prosecute.According to published reports this week, officials at the University of Mississippi are performing what is known in college sports parlance as “due diligence” on former Texas men’s basketball coach Chris Beard. That’s how these things often work.
Beard’s next employer no doubt will focus more on that statement and less on the arrest affidavit, which detailed how Beard’s fiancée called 911 in December and told police Beard had hit her, bit her and choked her from behind to the point where she could not breathe for up to five seconds. His fiancée later released a statement saying Beard did not strangle her and was acting in self-defense.
ESPN was the first to report Wednesday that Ole Miss had emerged as “the leading candidate” for the Rebels’ vacant head coaching position, and CBS Sports was among the outlets confirming that the school is in the process of “vetting” Beard before offering him the job.Does “vetting” mean you’re trying to find out whether Beard has done anything objectionable?
Pitino’s new school will have done due diligence on all of that, just like so many other big-time programs do.
