Waiting to begin her first-day orientation for her new night nurse job at a luxury retirement community, Eleni notices an energy in the geriatric exercise pool. There’s something unexpected about how the bodies are coming together in the water, the mental energy, the tone of conversation, and the way her new client turns around, out of the blue, to stare straight into her eyes. Bernstein’s atmospheric, psychosexual thriller explores how emotion, deception, and sexual obsession can come together in the liminal space between caregivers and the people they care for. On the initial creative impetus for the film, Bernstein told us, “This movie came from a scam that my grandmother nearly fell for. It’s the classic grandparent scam. Someone called her pretending to be my brother and said he had been in a horrible car accident and that he needed help and needed money, and she went all the way to the bank, and the tellers told her that it was a scam and they saw it all the time. But what stuck with me about the story was the achievement of the performance of the scammers, which made my grandma feel so needed and useful. And I just became obsessed with this idea of making a movie about the scammers where we see this theatrical performance that they put on doing these scams. I just thought it was so bizarre.”The story’s themes further clarified themselves, she said, after one particular sighting in Chicago. “Around the time that I was writing the script,” she said, “I was living in Chicago and I would pass by this billboard that was advertising medical school. It had a nurse or doctor wearing scrubs, and she’d be smiling, and then it would say, ‘It’s amazing to be needed.’ I thought this was such a bizarre confession to make, and it got me thinking about the dark side of caregiving and the compulsive side of caregiving — outside of the care industry, like in our relationships, our friendships. There were themes that were coming up in my own life, so I really wanted to explore that other side of caregiving.”Deadline’s Sundance Studio is running from January 23-26 at Trove Gallery, where the cast and creatives behind the best and buzziest titles in this year’s lineup are sitting down to discuss their movies and the paths they took to get to Park City.
