The first live-action remake was released in 2025, featuring Mason Thames as Hiccup, Nic Parker as Astrid, Gerard Butler as Stoick, and Nick Frost as Gobber. The live-action How to Train Your Dragon 2 was confirmed before its predecessor released in theaters and went on to gross $636.6 million worldwide and earn a"Verified Hot" 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. June 11, 2027 is the release date for the sequel. Director Dean DeBlois has now shared a behind-the-scenes image of himself smiling on day one of principal photography for How to Train Your Dragon 2. He also revealed a new look at the movie's logo, which can be seen for the first time in red. The caption reads: "Back in the saddle! Day 1 of principal photography on HTTYD2! The adventure begins…….." Check out the image below: Thames, Parker, Butler, and Frost are among the cast members returning to reprise their characters. After much speculation about who would play Hiccup's mother, Valka, it was announced that Cate Blanchett would portray the character after voicing her in the animated How to Train Your Dragon 2. Another key new character who has been cast is the villainous Drago. He will be played by Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, who previously voiced Ragnar the Rock in How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World.
