Hurricane Francine will bring gusting winds, heavy rain, and a tornado threat to parts of Alabama.
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Francine officially reached hurricane status just before 7:00pm Tuesday night. The newly-minted hurricane will track steadily towards the central Louisiana coast, making landfall Wednesday afternoon. After landfall, Francine will push northward through central Mississippi, putting Alabama on the eastern side of the storm, which opens up the likelihood of heavy rain, gusty wind and possibly some brief tornadoes here Wednesday night into Thursday.
Rainfall amounts of two to four inches are likely across most of the area - perhaps a bit less in the far eastern counties, while the western counties run up totals closer to the top of the range. The rain will come in waves; the time between these waves and the relatively dry conditions ahead of Francine should limit the flood threat.
