FireAid, a massive benefit concert held in Los Angeles, brought together a star-studded lineup of musicians and first responders to raise funds and awareness for those affected by the devastating wildfires in the area. The event featured performances from iconic artists like Lady Gaga, Green Day, Billie Eilish, and Red Hot Chili Peppers, among many others, who delivered powerful renditions of their hits and shared moving stories of resilience and hope.
Pop stars, first responders, rock legends, and those who lost everything in the devastating Los Angeles area wildfires came together for FireAid, a massive benefit concert Thursday that combined spectacular performances and moving survivor stories following the destruction. The night was full of surprises, with a Nirvana tribute — featuring St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, and Joan Jett singing in place of the late vocalist Kurt Cobain — topping the list.
They performed “Breed,” “School,” and “Territorial Pissings” respectively, inspired and unexpected choices. Then, Dave Grohl’s daughter, Violet, took the stage to perform “All Apologies.” Lady Gaga closed the event, after powerfully performing “Shallow” and “Always Remember Us This Way” from “A Star Is Born,” she played a new song on the piano. “It’s just for tonight, it’s just for you,” she said of the song she wrote with her fiancé, entrepreneur Michael Polansky. “Time heals.” “All I need is time/To heal my broken wings and then I’ll soar,” she sang in the pop folk melody. Green Day kicked off the big show launching into “Last Night on Earth” at the Kia Forum and soon Billie Eilish joined them for the first surprise of the night. The song’s lyrics surprisingly fit the occasion: “If I lose everything in the fire / I’m sending all my love to you.” After their performance, Green Day’s frontman Billie Joe Armstrong hugged actor Billy Crystal, who was there to welcome the audience at the Kia Forum. “Our goal is simple tonight, spend more money than the Dodgers spent on free agents,” he joked. He told the audience that U2 offered the first major donation of the night: a million dollars. Crystal said he was wearing the clothes he had on when he evacuated. He lost his home in the Pacific Palisades neighborhood where he lived for 46 years. The Southern California represented Is there any band that represents Southern California more in spirit and geography than the Red Hot Chili Peppers? Bassist Flea made a handstand on stage wearing only a tiny swimsuit before launching into one of his countless odes to the state: “Dani California,” “Californication” and “Under the Bridge.” The first truly Angeleno moment came from a surprise performance by Dr. Dre. The West Coast hip hop progenitor performed “Still D.R.E.” with Anderson .Paak and Sheila E. before moving into Tupac and Dre’s “California Love.” Next, the iconic Laurel Canyon folk figure performed a moving rendition of Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now.” Later in the night, the Orange County ska punk legends, No Doubt, who recently reunited, launched into “I’m Just a Girl,” “Don’t Speak” and “Spiderwebs,” led by vocalist Gwen Stefani. Katy Perry joined the Pasadena Chorus for “Rise” before belting out “Roar” and “California Gurls.” She strutted across the stage with the California state flag in hand. And Eilish and her brother Finneas, lifelong Los Angelinos, performed beautiful acoustic versions of their recent hits “Wildflower,” “The Greatest” and “Birds of a Feather.”Two venues, one big concert FireAid spread its performances across two venues, the Kia Forum and the Intuit Dome, providing almost continuous music streaming for almost six hours. Behind the opening performances, images of firefighters and the devastation caused by the fires appeared on screen. Olivia Rodrigo, Stevie Wonder, Sting and Pink offered memorable performances. Stevie Nicks performed “Edge of Seventeen,” “Stand Back” and “Landslide,” and told the story of how she evacuated her home in Pacific Palisades which miraculously did not burn down. Her house is mostly wood, built in 1938, and she said that its loss would have destroyed the whole street. Earth, Wind & Fire did a medley of their biggest hits: “That’s the Way of the World,” “Shining Star” and “September.” The Black Crowes accompanied John Fogerty in “Have You Ever Seen the Rain?” Then Slash joined in. Lil Baby offered a rare break from hip hop in a night mostly of pop and rock, with his hits “So Sorry” and “Emotionally Scarred.” Tate McRae performed her 2020 hit “You Broke Me First” and a version of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.” Jelly Roll brought country music to the event, performing his hit “I Am Not Okay” and a version of Bob Seger’s “Hollywood Nights” with Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker.
