Green Day and Billie Eilish kicked off FireAid, a massive two-venue benefit concert raising money for Los Angeles -area wildfire relief efforts. The night was a mix of spectacular performances, moving storytelling from survivors, and reminders of the destruction caused by the devastating LA-area wildfires. A surprise reunion of Nirvana, fronted by St. Vincent, Kim Gordon, and Joan Jett, was a highlight, performing 'Breed,' 'School,' and 'Territorial Pissings.
' Closer Lady Gaga, after powering through Oscar-award winning 'Shallow' and 'Always Remember Us This Way', played a new song on the piano, written with her fiancé Michael Polansky. Green Day opened the show with 'Last Night on Earth' at the Kia Forum, soon joined by Billie Eilish. Actor Billy Crystal, who lost his home in the Pacific Palisades, welcomed the crowd and announced a $1 million donation from U2. The Red Hot Chili Peppers brought their signature Southern California spirit with performances of 'Dani California,' 'Californication,' and 'Under the Bridge.' Dr. Dre surprised the crowd with a West Coast hip-hop set featuring 'Still D.R.E.', 'California Love', and 'California Love'. Joni Mitchell offered a moving set with 'Both Sides Now'. Other notable performers included No Doubt, Katy Perry, Billie Eilish and Finneas, Stevie Nicks, Earth, Wind & Fire, The Black Crowes, John Fogerty, Lil Baby, Tate McRae, Jelly Roll, and Bob Seger. Between sets, survivors shared their stories of losing their homes, adding an emotional depth to the event.
