Published: Jul. 16, 2024, 3:15 a.m.MOAB, Utah — A father and daughter hiking in a national park during extreme heat were found dead after they reportedly got lost and ran out of water, authorities say.
Albino Herrera Espinoza, 52, and Beatriz Herrera, 23, both from Green Bay, Wisconsin, were found dead in the Upheaval Dome area of Canyonlands National Park, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. According to the National Parks Service, temperatures were above 100 degrees. The pair had sent emergency texts to 911 saying they were lost and out of water, the Parks Service says. Park rangers and Bureau of Land Management Moab District Helitack personnel searched for the hikers but they already were dead when they were found late Friday afternoon, the Parks Service says. The sheriff’s office says a helicopter was needed to retrieve the bodies early Saturday morning because of the remote area and rugged terrain.Espinoza and his wife owned two Mexican restaurants, one in Green Bay and another in Ashwaubenon, Wis.
