A Cedar City family is preparing to say goodbye to a 7-year-old child who was struck by an SUV while riding a scooter on his way to school. The incident happened on Monday morning near 1100 North and North Field Road.
The 7-year-old, now identified by the family as Nathan Rees, became pinned under the SUV and suffered significant injuries, including head trauma. He was taken to the Cedar City Hospital but was later airlifted to Primary Children's Hospital in Salt Lake for additional treatment. "His brain injuries affect every part of his body - from cognition to basic reflexes, including his ability to see, hear, move and eat," the family said. "This is a reality no family should ever have to face, and we are devastated." The family said they would begin transitioning Rees into comfort care and allowing him to pass peacefully. Through the GoFundMe, Nathan Rees was described as "a light in his home, at school and everywhere he went." His family said he was bright, energetic, and full of life, and he will never be forgotten. They also decided to donate his organs to help children in need, which they believe is something he would have wanted. "While this is a tragic ending to one story, we find some peace in knowing it can become a new beginning for many others through his gift," the family added. The Iron County School District, where Rees attended East Elementary, said in a statement that the situation has deeply affected the community. "We are truly saddened by this loss and the impact it has on the family and community. We understand this news may bring up many emotions and questions for the children who knew Nathan," School district officials said in a statement. "Our primary goal is to support them through this sensitive time. Our district is a close-knit family, and the loss of one of our students is felt by everyone." A district crisis intervention team will be on-site at East Elementary to help students and staff, and a wellness room with counselors will be made available over the coming days and weeks. Iron County School District officials advised parents who feel their child needs additional assistance or who may have concerns to reach out to their school office or counseling department.A suspect was killed in an officer-involved shooting near4500 South on northbound I-15.The shooting involved a Utah Highway Patrol trooper, who jumped out of hBangerter Highway will be closed in West Jordan over the weekend. The highway will close from 9000 South to 7800 South starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday, March 28,A St. George neighborhood experienced an infestation of hundreds of roof rats.
