) - The city of Fairhope is taking measures to conserve water by drilling wells specifically meant for irrigation. One is already online at one of the city’s sports complexes and a second will be added in the next budget year.Blistering heat is expected once again this summer which means water usage will go up as folks try to stay cool and keep their grass and gardens alive.
That well is online and feeding the irrigation system at the Fairhope Soccer Complex on County Rd. 13. The facility has several large fields of sod. Putting the park on the city drinking water system would only deplete the supply, but not watering could kill the grass, so that wasn’t an option either.
“I think that we need to take care of the places that we create for kids and sports and things that keep kids out of the streets,” Fairhope resident, John Holman said.
