After coming ashore, the tornado moved over neighborhoods to the east of the park before lifting. Mayor Sullivan said it’s necessary to keep North Beach closed for public safety until all the hanging branches can be spotted and removed.
) - Five days after Fairhope was hit by an EF-1 tornado, cleanup is still underway. The twister ripped through the North Beach area and neighborhood just to the east, downing trees and scattering debris. The public park at North Beach will remain closed until the weekend.The gates at North Beach Park in Fairhope remained closed Wednesday, June 5, 2024 as city crews continued to remove debris.
“I mean, this is something none of us were prepared for,” said Fairhope mayor, Sherry Sullivan. “We certainly didn’t think that it was going to get that bad. Make sure that you’re signed up for weather alerts. Make sure that you have the supplies on hand that you need to take care of yourself for at least seventy-two hours. Know that our crews are coming out.”
Those city crews have a lot to get to. “I really appreciate our citizens having patience with us, but again, when you have hurricanes, you have these debris removal teams that come in and remove all that debris,” Sullivan explained. “Right now, this isn’t a storm of that significance, so our regular crews are trying to do this in between their regular routes so please be patient. Keep your stuff out at the curb. They’re getting there just as quickly as we can.
Residents are asked to be patient while city crews finish cleanup. Melanie Boykin was spending the day with her two grandsons and said since they can’t play in the park, they’d find another way to pass the time.Residents should put debris on the curb like they do for regular pickup. Cleanup should be finished and the beach back open to the public by Friday afternoon or Saturday morning.
