On May 25, 2004, Cunningham accompanied then-Deputy Mayor Anthony Cruz on a bicycle tour from City Hall to a party at Five Corners. Hours later, in his Society Hill home, he was stricken with chest pains and was soon unconscious.

Cunningham, who served as a Hudson County freeholder in the mid-1970s and Jersey City council in the 1980s, died of a heart attack on May 4, 2004.
