Today, its impressive Buddhist monasteries can be explored in the Sukhothai Historical Park, in Central Thailand.Among the historical park's most popular sites is Wat Si Chum, which features a giant seated Buddha statue.Every year, Sukhothai hosts a Festival of Lights to celebrate Loy Krathong, a popular nation-wide observance.

UNESCO added the city and its associated towns to its World Heritage list in 1991, crediting Sukhothai with developing many of the unique identifying characteristics that represent Thai culture today, including language, religion and architecture.Wat Mahathat, pictured, sits at the center of the historical park.Loy Krathong takes place on evening of the full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar – usually in November. Sukhothai hosts Thailland's biggest Loy Krathong festival.
