A closer look at the history behind Auburn and Georgia's storied rivalry

Rather than on a warm fall Saturday, Auburn and Georgia’s first-ever meeting came on a dark, dreary day in February at rain-soaked Piedmont Park in Atlanta, and the game that ensued hardly resembled what we call football today.

Over the 132 years since the game was played, that day has become the subject of folk tales and urban legend. Not only was it the first time the schools played, but it was an introduction to live mascots, something that became a large part of both schools’ football tradition. “Ever since that victory that goat has been a requisite part of the paraphernalia of the football team,” a Feb. 19, 1892, edition of the Atlanta Journal read, previewing the next day’s game.

One of the many origin stories of the war eagle comes from the 1892 meeting, when the eagle supposedly made its first flight during an Auburn game. , legend said that the eagle began circling the field during the game as Auburn marched down the field to score a touchdown. The story first appeared as a satire tale in a mid-20th century edition of The Plainsman, written by Jim Phillips.Since 1956, a white bulldog has served as the living symbol of Georgia football.

What happened next became a symbol of the heated rivalry that many Georgia fans still reference nearly 30 years later.
