103,000 customers in North County and parts of Orange County had no electricity for about an hour.
Excess load on a transmission line running between San Diego and Orange counties may have led to about 103,000 San Diego Gas & Electric customers losing power for about an hour on Thursday night. Officials with the California Independent System Operator said an increase of north-south flow on the line triggered an automated safety shutdown system that resulted in the power outage.
The system operator, which manages the high-voltage electricity grid for about 80% of California and a small portion of Nevada, said Friday afternoon that it is still trying to figure out what caused the excess flow on the line. An investigation, California ISO spokesperson Jayme Ackemann said, is under way and may take several days to conclude. She said the excess did not damage the transmission line. The outage spanned sections of North County, including Escondido, Encinitas and Carlsbad, as well as portions of SDG&E’s service territory in Orange County. The affected areas included La Costa, Cardiff, Olivenhain, Rancho Santa Fe and San Elijo Lagoon, as well as inland communities of Rancho Bernardo, Rancho Peñasquitos, Lake Hodges and San Pasqual. “We coordinated promptly with SDG&E to ensure there was sufficient generation in the area to restore services,” Ackemann said. SDG&E spokesperson Anthony Wagner said the utility is working with the system operator on its review of the incident, adding, “We know outages are disruptive, and the safety of our customers, employees and communities remains our top priority.”Fourth Padres suitor becomes publicNightmare start for Nick Pivetta, Padres in opening-day loss to TigersA little-known Navy-Marine battle group from San Diego is making a beeline for the Middle EastAztecs star Miles Byrd to enter NCAA transfer portal, finish career elsewhere
