State high schools are being urged to adopt more generic uniforms and end their branding war with private schools as more families than ever seek financial help.
State Schools Relief – a not-for-profit organisation set up to assist with school costs – has recorded two of its highest months for requests for help in its 93-year history this year: in February, as the school year began, and last month, with the onset of winter.Luis Ascui
Advocates for affordable schooling say second-hand items are not always available and children can often be bullied or penalised for basic infringements, such as the wrong shoes or socks. Now in year nine, Mikayla is still careful not to stain or lose her uniform and said students would be more relaxed at school if they weren’t constantly worried about ruining their clothes.
“Some parents tell us that they feel public schools are trying too hard to look like private schools, when what they are really interested in is the quality of education and support provided to their children, rather than how they look,” she said. The Council of Single Mothers and their Children chief executive officer Jenny Davidson said badged school uniforms, in particular blazers and other seasonal requirements, were a real affordability issue for families.“Having more standardisation among uniforms is an excellent solution,” she said. “The most important overall factor is that teenagers are not blocked from full participation by feeling different.
