South African President Cyril Ramaphosa made a strong request of his Russian counterpart while in Moscow as part of a peace-seeking mission with seven other leaders.
Mr Ramaphosa met with his Russian counterpart in St Petersburg on Saturday as part of a delegation of seven African leaders.
The seven African nations represented called for both parties to return their prisoners of war and end the conflict through diplomatic means. Mr Putin used the peace-seeking talks to blame Western sanctions and actions for the grain crisis, saying only 3 per cent of grain exports covered by an UN-sponsored deal have gone to the world’s poorest countries.
"Children are sacred. We moved them out of the conflict zone, saving their lives and health," he said. President Putin praised the “balanced approach” of African countries towards the Ukraine conflict during the talks.
