Jerrold Noble, Brisa Strachan and their 12-year-old daughter had to move after a fire started in the kitchen of their Eight Mile home last August. They were in

a rental unit for 10 months while their home was being repaired, which is why they were so confused when they started getting high water bills. While they weren't living here, somehow their water usage went up. Their statement says they used 6,000 gallons of water in March and 16,000 gallons in April.

"I don't have a pool or nothing that takes anything that has that amount of water to be used," said Noble. The bill received after they moved back in this summer shows they used 1,700 gallons of water. Strachan says she tried to explain this to a Prichard Water worker. She showed them the lease agreement where they were living somewhere else and a picture of a wire to their old water meter that appeared damaged. The meter was replaced this week. The couple also showed the utility a letter from a plumber who inspected the home for leaks.

"Even though we know we didn't use that amount of water not being here," said Strachan. "I just really wish that they would listen to the residents. Instead of when we come in there, we speak our problems, you want to be argumentative and combative with us. Like, listen to our problems and actually take the time to see what's wrong, versus having us come in here."

A spokesperson for the receiver running Prichard Water says they are digging into what happened and are working on a resolution.
