Two recent incidents in Seattle and Pennsylvania highlight the increasing problem of egg theft as the country grapples with a nationwide shortage caused by bird flu.
Surveillance video has captured two suspects loading hundreds of dollars worth of eggs and other breakfast foods into a white van before speeding away from Luna Park Café in Seattle. This brazen theft comes amidst a nationwide egg shortage caused by the highly contagious avian influenza, also known as bird flu, which has significantly impacted the poultry industry. The incident at Luna Park Café is just one example of the growing problem.
In a separate case, thieves stole 100,000 eggs, valued at approximately $40,000, from a Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs facility in Pennsylvania. Tom Flocco, CEO of Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs, expressed concern, stating, 'It could happen once, it could happen again. We are putting additional measures in place.'The bird flu outbreak has resulted in the culling of over 20 million birds across the United States in the past month alone. This has led to a dramatic decrease in egg production, contributing to the ongoing shortage and driving up prices. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported 67 human infections in the U.S., all attributed to direct contact with sick or dead birds. Officials have emphasized that there is no evidence of human-to-human transmission of the virus
