Two separate egg thefts, one in Seattle and another in Pennsylvania, highlight the growing problem of food insecurity and the impact of the ongoing bird flu outbreak on egg supplies.
Seattle authorities are investigating a brazen theft from a local cafe after surveillance footage captured two suspects loading hundreds of dollars worth of eggs and other breakfast items into a white van before speeding away. The burglary occurred at Luna Park Café in Seattle. Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Pennsylvania police are working to solve a major egg heist involving 100,000 eggs worth approximately $40,000, stolen from a Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs facility.
Tom Flocco, CEO of Pete and Gerry's Organic Eggs, expressed concern about the recurring nature of such thefts, stating, 'It could happen once, it could happen again. We are putting additional measures in place.' These incidents come amidst a nationwide egg shortage caused by the highly pathogenic avian influenza (bird flu). In just the past month, over 20 million birds have been affected by the virus across the country. As infected flocks are culled and their eggs destroyed to prevent the spread of the virus, supply chains have been disrupted, leading to soaring egg prices and widespread shortages. Despite the concerns, officials have reassured the public that there has been no instance of human-to-human transmission of the bird flu. Sixty-seven people in the U.S. have been infected, primarily those with direct contact with sick or dead animals.
