The DWP shares steps being taken to ensure legacy benefit claims are not terminated if someone misses application deadline.
The Department for Work and Pensions will send out MIgration Notices to people on legacy benefits across Great Britain when it is their time to make a new claim for Universal Credit. This is happening now in stages for people on Tax Credits-only and will include those on other legacy benefits from 2027, to be completed by 2029.
He continued: “The Department provides a range of support to individuals, to assist them during migration including a dedicated DWP telephone line and signposting to independent support through the Help to Claim service. “If claimants haven’t made a claim for UC and after the three month period, on a case by case basis, there is a grace period of one month within which a Tax Credit claimant can make a claim for UC without losing eligibility for transitional protection.”

Social Security Scotland said ensuring claimants submit an application before the deadline will mean “they don’t lose financial support”.
