Moana and Moana 2 were both incredibly successful animated movies for Disney, with the second film surpassing the first's box office performance, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. The first movie remains one of the most-streamed films on Disney+, with reportedly over 1.
4 billion hours streamed. Disney has released a trailer for its upcoming live-action Moana, which offers a fresh look at the fan-favorite characters beloved around the world. The live-action adaptation will be released in theaters on July 10. Catherine Lagaʻaia has taken the role of the wayfinder Moana, with Dwayne"The Rock" Johnson reprising his voice acting role as demigod Maui. John Tui has been cast as Moana’s father, Chief Tui; Frankie Adams, who portrays Moana’s playful and strong-willed mother, Sina; and Rena Owen as Moana’s revered Gramma Tala. The reimagining of the Oscar-nominated animated adventure is directed by Emmy and Tony Award winner Thomas Kali . Auli’i Cravalho, who was the original voice of Moana in the original film and its sequel, will serve as an executive producer. The live-action will feature music by Mark Mancina, Opetaia Foa’i, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who is also producing the movie. Also returning are Dana Ledoux Miller and Jared Bush to write the screenplay after previously writing the script for 2016's Moana. Miranda earned an Oscar nomination for original song "How Far I'll Go" in the first animated movie. This isn't the first live-action adaptation from Disney in recent years, following the highly successful Lilo and Stitch adaptation, which grossed over $1 billion worldwide at the box office. However, not all live-action movies have worked in Disney's favor, including Snow White, as it only grossed $87 million worldwide despite having a massive budget and achieving a Rotten Tomatoes score of 40%. Despite some negativity surrounding Disney's live-action remakes of beloved animated classics, fans are thrilled to be seeing more representation on a big screen and in major productions, which is what Moana provided, even as an animated feature. After the successful animated movies, only time will tell if the live-action movie will meet the same heights.
