DuPage County Board Chair Deb Conroy has announced her intention to remove the name of late Republican Congressman Henry Hyde from the DuPage County Courthouse. Fifteen years ago, the courthouse was renamed in Hyde's honor, recognizing his significant role in Republican politics and his representation of Illinois' 6th District for over three decades.
However, Conroy argues that Hyde's staunch opposition to abortion, particularly his authorship of the Hyde Amendment which restricted Medicaid funding for abortions, makes it inappropriate to commemorate him in this way. \Conroy, a Democrat, stated that the Hyde Amendment disproportionately affected low-income women, denying them access to healthcare that others received. She acknowledged that the issue was not initially on her radar but was raised during her campaign. She pledged to address it, emphasizing her commitment to her word. \The DuPage County Board will vote on the resolution to remove Hyde's name on Tuesday. With a Democratic majority, Conroy is confident the proposal will pass. Kevin Coyne, the DuPage County GOP Chair, expressed his opposition to the decision, arguing that it is unfair and short-sighted to focus solely on one issue from Hyde's long career. He believes that removing Hyde's name will damage the bipartisan relationships Conroy has cultivated during her tenure as chair. Despite the potential for division, Conroy expressed her hope that both sides can maintain respectful communication and understanding. She has reached out to the Hyde family, speaking with his son and daughter-in-law, who reportedly understand the changing political landscape. If the resolution passes, the Hyde family will be honored with a plaque at the courthouse
