The driver of a sedan who allegedly ran into the back of a Jeep that plunged off a freeway connector into the Sweetwater River was arrested on suspicion of DUI and murder.
A 61-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI and murder on Sunday after authorities said he ran his sedan into the rear of a Jeep on a state Route 54 connector ramp, sending the SUV into the Sweetwater River below.
The crash was reported shortly after 12:50 a.m. as the two vehicles — a Jeep Liberty and a Volkswagen EOS — were heading west on Route 54 toward the southbound lanes of Interstate 5. Route 54 is a boundary between National City and Chula Vista. According to California Highway Patrol Officer Michael Wessendorf, the driver of the Volkswagen crashed into the rear of the Jeep “for reasons still under investigation,” and the Jeep left the roadway and landed in the river, where it became fully submerged. Emergency personnel who responded to the scene extricated both the driver and the passenger of the Jeep, but neither could be revived. Their names were not released pending notification of the next of kin by the county Medical Examiner’s Office. Douglas Guyton was being held without bail in county jail on suspicion of murder and DUI, according to online jail records. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday.This Sacramento suburb is booming.
