The funding is made possible through Alabama State Amendment 772, which allows municipalities to enter into such agreements in support of economic development.

DOTHAN, Ala. - Dothan city commissioners approved an economic development agreement with Dothan Nurseries for the next ten years to help the business build a new greenhouse. The garden center, located on Montgomery Highway, is eligible to receive up to $60,000 in sales tax revenue rebates over the next ten years under the agreement.

The funding is made possible through Alabama State Amendment 772, which allows municipalities to enter into such agreements in support of economic development. “This is kind of an economic incentive that we’re able to do there,” said Randy Morris, city manager. “With Dothan Nurseries being on a major corridor in an area that’s not seen a whole lot of growth, this is an ideal candidate.” Under the agreement, the city receives 4% sales tax. Two percent will be kept by the city, while the other two percent will be returned to Dothan Nurseries at the end of the year if they exceed their average sales tax generation. Mark Parker, president of the Dothan Area Chamber of Commerce, said this is an exciting opportunity for the growing business. “They’ve been a destination in the market for many years,” Parker said. “J.D. Boone and his team wanted to go ahead and move forward with that greenhouse to generate more sales and more activity, economic enhancement. And there was a gap there. It helps him move forward to invest, golly, close to $400,000, create more income, more employment opportunities, get the construction activity, and help grow and revitalize the targeted area that we’re really focused on in the city of Dothan for redevelopment.” Dothan Nurseries joins other beneficiaries, such as Eagle Eye Outfitters, who have been chosen for this program. Parker said he is hopeful the investment in economic development will pay off. “There’s risk on all parts, but it’s a good thing to grow new revenue,” Parker said. “His participation is based on the new revenue he generates for this project. So it’s a good deal for everybody and will be a big asset in our community. We’re excited about it.” Download the WTVY News4 app to get alerts and stories the moment they are published.
