Two commercial airplanes, a Delta flight from Detroit and a United flight from San Francisco, nearly collided at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday. Both pilots received collision warnings and air traffic control intervened to safely guide both aircraft to land.
Two commercial airplanes came perilously close to colliding at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday, prompting alert systems in both cockpits and requiring air traffic controllers to issue corrective instructions. According to FlightRadar24, a flight tracking service, Delta Flight 1070, originating from Detroit and carrying 245 passengers, was cleared to land on Runway 8 when a collision warning sounded in the cockpit around 11 a.m.
Simultaneously, United Flight 1724, traveling from San Francisco with 123 passengers, also received a similar alert. Both aircraft were separated by 1,217 feet horizontally and 875 feet vertically at their closest point, as reported by FlightRadar24. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that both planes landed safely after experiencing a loss of required separation while approaching the runway. The FAA emphasized that air traffic control promptly issued corrective instructions to both crews. CNN has reached out to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines for further comment. This incident at Phoenix Sky Harbor follows a concerning trend of 'runway incursions' at airports across the United States in recent years. A notable near-collision occurred at Austin-Bergstrom International Airport in February 2023, involving a FedEx Boeing 767 and a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737. At their closest point, these aircraft were separated by only 150 feet. An investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) attributed this near-collision to an air traffic controller's flawed judgment due to dense fog. Another close call at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York in 2023 was determined to be caused by pilots who were repeatedly distracted in the cockpit, according to the NTSB.In response to this escalating number of incidents, the FAA has implemented several measures, including additional training for air traffic controllers and a rare summit to address the alarming frequency of close calls on American runways. Key topics discussed at the summit included air traffic controller fatigue, which is believed to contribute to these dangerous situations. The FAA's efforts aim to bolster safety protocols and prevent future runway incursions that could have catastrophic consequences
