After four successful seasons, David Watts has resigned as head coach of the G.W. Long Rebels football program. Watts, who led the team to a 26-17 record and three playoff appearances, will remain at the school as a physical education/weightlifting teacher, assistant softball coach, and athletic director. He cited a desire to explore new opportunities and allow ample time for a thorough search for his replacement.

Watts said he has some other job opportunities that he wants to explore and wanted to give G.W. Long time to do a thorough search in finding a replacement. Watts has been coaching the last 25 years with stops at Highland Home, Straughn, Luverne, McKenzie, Georgiana and Brantley before G.W. Long. Watts was also a head football coach at Georgiana from halfway through the 2010 season through 2012, guiding the Panthers to a 3-17 in his two full seasons.
Watts guided G.W. Long to records of 8-2, 8-4 and 7-4 in his first three seasons. This past season, with a young inexperienced team hitting the field, the program dipped to 3-7.
