David Watts, head coach of the G.W. Long Rebels football team, has stepped down after four seasons. Watts leaves behind a legacy of dedication and success, impacting both the football and softball programs.
G.W. Long head coach David Watts has resigned from his position leading the Rebels football program after four seasons. Watts' departure was announced by G.W. Long Principal Daniel Barrentine, who praised Watts' contributions to the school and its student athletes. 'He's been a great coach to us and our student athletes. He helped bring back Fellowship of Christian Athletes. We will truly miss him and we are grateful for all his many accomplishments to our program',' Barrentine stated.
Watts led the Rebels to a 3-7 record last season, which was marked by numerous injuries to a young team. Overall, Watts compiled a 26-17 record during his time at G.W. Long. Prior to his arrival in Skipperville, he spent two seasons coaching at Georgiana High School. Watts expressed gratitude for his time at G.W. Long, highlighting the positive relationships he built with staff and the students. 'The last 4 years at GW Long have been a blessing to my family. I’ve had a daughter graduate from here, a son that is closing in on graduating, and celebrated the birth of another son. Professionally I couldn’t have asked for better people to work with. The staff has been awesome and the administration has gone above and beyond to be helpful. Mostly I will miss the kids I have coached in football and on the softball field. They have been great and I regret not getting to finish things out with many of them.', Watts shared.Despite his regret at leaving before concluding his work with many of his players, Watts emphasized that he believes stepping away is the right decision at this time. 'However, after prayerful consideration I feel like now is the right time for me to step away and give someone else a chance at stewardship of this program. I look forward to what the future holds and will always cheer for the Rebels.', he concluded. Principal Barrentine confirmed that Watts will continue to assist the school until the end of the academic year, including contributing to the success of the softball team
