A man sentenced to life for murder was mistakenly released from prison in Georgia, sparking a multi-state manhunt. Kathan Guzman was apprehended in Florida by US Marshals after leaving the state following his accidental release.

A man who was sentenced to life in prison for murder was accidentally released from custody, sparking a multi-week manhunt that stretched across several states. Kathan Guzman was convicted of murder and aggravated assault in October 2024 for the 2022 killing of 19-year-old Delia Grayson. Authorities stated that Guzman strangled Grayson to death.

Despite his claim of self-defense, the court found that the force used was excessive and could not be considered self-defense, according to a release from the Clayton County District Attorney's office. Months after his sentencing, Guzman was mistakenly released from the Clayton County Jail on March 27 at approximately 4:49 p.m. The circumstances surrounding his unintentional release remain under investigation. It wasn't until weeks later, on April 8, that the error was discovered by Sheriff Levon Allen. Sheriff Allen immediately reached out to law enforcement agencies across Georgia, assembling a task force of investigators. They determined that Guzman had fled Georgia and was hiding in another state. Sheriff Allen then escalated the case to the U.S. Marshals, providing them with the information gathered by his team. 'I am proud to report that earlier today, April 11, 2025, the U.S. Marshals apprehended Guzman in Florida,' Sheriff Allen announced in a press release. Sheriff Allen emphasized that the reason behind Guzman's release is currently under investigation, and the findings could potentially lead to the termination of jail employees
