City of Mobile's Homeless Outreach Program and community partners help homeless veteran

The community took to Facebook, asking for help for the man. It was that very social media post that caught Kendell Young’s eye.

“It creates a calmer environment,” Young explained. “A lot of the homeless have different encounters with the police whether it be good or bad, but this allows things to be mellowed down. It presents the officers not in a threatening way.”“My first interaction was nothing more than a meet-and-greet and a delivery of some resources- food, water, deodorant, things of that nature,” said Officer Howard.

“I contacted a friend of mine- Dale- who runs Driftwood Ministries- who then led me into contact with some people what they call Central Presbyterian Church- they run a food pantry on Tuesdays. They have a clothing closet for homeless veterans,” he added. “Being that that I’m in the National Guard and I come from a veteran background- in this case, that helped,” Officer Howard stated. “There’s the ability to connect, there’s the ability to understand.”
