Little did I know as a child how many more times over the years I would hear that booming voice and that message related to some aspect of business or civic progress: “We have to do it. Let’s get it done. Start now!” He would have been a success in whatever field he had chosen, and I once told him I was glad it wasn’t politics because he would have dominated the scene from San Antonio to Washington for as long as he wanted. I told him he was the logical successor to the Lyndon Johnson-John Connally-Ben Barnes dynasty. He didn’t deny it, but he was too busy building things, employing people, creating wealth for others and giving gifts to public institutions.
