A pair of visitors walk past a display of a cannon after strolling the grounds at the Alamo on Friday, Aug. 21, 2020. The grounds recently re-opened to allow visitors in limited capacity to tour around the monument. The gift shop also re-opened though the Alamo itself remained closed. Tour guides and living historians were scattered about to give talks to patrons.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Billy Joe ‘Red’ McCombs, a beloved member of the San Antonio community and a longtime supporter of the Alamo,” the trust said. “Mr. McCombs' contributions to the Alamo and to San Antonio as a whole are immeasurable. His dedication to philanthropy, business and civic leadership has left an indelible mark on our community.”
He often loaned precious antiques and relics to the Alamo and Briscoe Western Art Museum. In 2013, his McCombs Foundation helped fund a 13-day exhibit of the famed “Victory or Death” letter written by William Barret Travis, Alamo commander. “You Daughters saved it. No one could ever question it. And you should revel in it all your life,” McCombsjust a few months after their role as Alamo custodians and operators ended.
