Greg Abbott and Spurs coach Gregg Popovich are scheduled to speak at a public funeral service Monday for late San Antonio businessman and philanthropist B.J. “Red” McCombs.
Doors will open at 9 a.m. ahead of the 10 a.m. service, titled “A Celebration of a Life Well Lived,” at the Tobin Center for Performing Arts downtown.. A former used car dealer, he became a billionaire entrepreneur who found success in a variety of industries, including oil and gas, radio stations and sports teams, bringing the team that would become the Spurs to San Antonio.
Entry to the service will be first-come, first-served, according to Mission Park Funeral Chapels & Cemeteries. The theater can hold 1,900 people, and the Tobin Center will have overflow seating to accommodate up to 900 additional guests. Guests should give themselves time to go through security.
The service will include a video tribute to McCombs’ life that features those who won’t be able to attend the service, including former Spurs player David Robinson, University of Texas at Austin President Jay Hartzell and Lillian Mills, dean of the McCombs School of Business.
