LaRoyce Hawkins discusses the Chicago P.D. season 13 pregnancy reveal and how it will shape his character Atwater's future

The Chicago P.D. family is about to get a little bigger — and a whole lot cuter — after one character announced she’s pregnant on the latest episode!During the Wednesday, January 28, episode of the NBC series, Kevin Atwater got some surprising news: he’s going to be a father! After struggling all episode on what to text fellow police officer Tasha Fox , whom Atwater reconnected with earlier this season before she moved to Miami, Tasha showed up unannounced at his place.

Although he was surprised, Atwater was happy to see her, telling Tasha, “I want to see you. I want to get to know you better.” He kissed her before she dropped the pregnancy bombshell on him. “I should’ve told you before but I wanted to see what I wanted before I told you. And I thought a lot about it, and I want this baby,” Tasha explained. “Whether you’re in our lives or not, I want this baby, and that’s not going to change. But then you reached out, so I thought maybe … Kevin, you OK?” Atwater simply smiled after discovering he’s going to be a dad, but Hawkins, 37, revealed that his character’s milestone does make him a little “nervous.” “I’m very excited. But I’m also nervous,” Hawkins explained during the Thursday, January 29, episode of the “One Chicago Podcast.” He pointed out, “It’s similar nerves to how you get .” The actor noted that the moment he found out about Atwater’s next steps, he turned to executive producer Chad Saxton for advice on how to portray the officer now that he has more to lose and live for. “The very next episode, I asked Chad to keep me in the pocket, I was like, ‘Chad, there’s a difference between a guy that’s solving crimes and saving lives and a guy that’s solving crimes and saving lives and he’s about to be a father soon,’” Hawkins told podcast host Brian Luce. “Chad is helping me navigate through the small things that I can think about.” Hawkins revealed that while the show is “not going to touch on” parenthood “all the time,” he is curious as to how much of a role it’ll play for Atwater moving forward. “There’s a nature to being a father on crime shows where you hope everything works out. You know, I’m optimistic about everything working out,” he said. “And you know, it’s hard to say. It’s not that up to me, but it’s just like fatherhood. It’s like, you don’t know what you’re gonna get.” Outside of his fatherhood journey, Atwater’s love life is something fans have been waiting to see unfold for years — and showrunner Gwen Sigan previously told Us Weekly that it was coming soon. “Romance is in the cards,” Sigan reassured Us earlier this month, teasing that Wednesday’s episode was only the beginning. Sigan explained that Atwater’s “great meet-cute” with Tasha — they were friends at the academy who were assigned to work a beat together during episode 5 when a bomb went off in Chicago that bonded them once again — “presented a challenge” for him and made him look inward to what he really wants out of life. “She was basically like, ‘I’m getting out of Chicago. I’m done with Chicago.’ But she also knew exactly what she wanted,” the showrunner said of Tasha’s mindset during episode 5. “ her just pushing him a little bit on, like, ‘Well, what do you want?’ It makes him reflect a bit and start thinking on that question.” Sigan then teased, “We’ve got more things planned for his romance down the line” after the “really fun episode” fans watched this week. When it comes to Atwater’s love life, Hawkins revealed on Thursday’s podcast that his character is “a little poetic at times” and a romantic at heart.“What I wrote was something like this, ‘From the heart to the first responder. If you ask me what I want and what I really need. 390-full speed, bullet green. I just want to feel the power of my own dreams. Is there a manual for meeting moments? My issue is, I miss the way you saw things. Like a soft kiss. You sure can make a vis invisible and hard to miss. Pardon my tardiness but hurry up and take your time because you started it. From the heart to the first responder,’” Hawkins said on podcast.
