Chicagoans are in for a wild ride with the weather this week, experiencing a rapid transition from unseasonably warm temperatures to a deep freeze. The roller coaster begins with a dusting of snow and a brief period of warmth before a sudden plunge into sub-zero temperatures.

Chicago is experiencing a dramatic shift in weather patterns, starting with unusually warm temperatures and transitioning to a deep freeze. The week began with a dusting of snow, but Thursday brought highs reaching the mid-to-upper 30s, some of the warmest temperatures seen in weeks. The region has only seen four days above freezing this year, with the highest reading being 35 degrees last weekend.

Friday will see even warmer weather, with temperatures stretching into the upper 30s or even the low 40s. However, this warmth will be short-lived. Rain will transition into a wintry mix and possibly even snow overnight Friday and into Saturday morning as temperatures plummet. Any wintry precipitation is expected to end Saturday morning along and east of Interstate 55. Some accumulations could remain, particularly in areas south of I-55, depending on how quickly temperatures cool.Temperatures will continue their descent on Sunday, dropping into the low teens and possibly even single digits. Overnight Sunday and into Monday, temperatures could dip to minus-5 degrees, with wind chills plummeting 15-to-25 degrees below zero. If temperatures fall low enough, especially Monday and Tuesday, they could mark the coldest temperatures in the city since late January 2019. Monday will see bitterly cold temperatures throughout the day, with overnight lows dipping below zero. Wednesday will bring a slight reprieve as highs return to the 20s for the remainder of the work week.
