The year 2026 promises a cosmic bonanza with supermoons, eclipses, and a renewed focus on lunar exploration, including planned missions. Expect increased activity from the sun and several visible planetary alignments.

The cosmos is set for a spectacular year, with celestial events and lunar missions taking center stage. The moon itself will be a major focus, drawing attention with supermoons, eclipses, and planned missions. This includes the return of astronauts to the lunar surface in more than 50 years, with a caravan of robotic lunar landers, including Jeff Bezos’ new supersized Blue Moon.

The year will begin with a supermoon on January 3rd and an astronomical blue moon in May, offering stunning visual displays. The sun is also poised to generate buzz with a ring-of-fire eclipse in February and a total solar eclipse in August, with the possibility of increased auroras in unexpected locations. Beyond the moon and sun, the fading comet 3I/Atlas, which recently passed Earth, will continue its journey after swinging past Jupiter in March. With improved technology, NASA is expecting the discovery of more interstellar visitors.\NASA’s upcoming moonshot commander Reid Wiseman believes his crew will be the first to explore vast sections of the lunar far side. This could benefit geologists and future landing site selectors. The Artemis lunar exploration program is set to leave boot prints with the next crew. Robotic missions from China and U.S. companies are also scheduled. Amazon founder Bezos's Blue Origin aims to launch a prototype of its lunar lander for NASA's astronauts early in the year, with a larger crew-ready version planned. Astrobotic Technology and Intuitive Machines are targeting 2026 landings for scientific equipment, while Firefly Aerospace is aiming for the far side of the moon in 2026. China has plans to send a rover and a hopper to the south polar region to hunt for ice.\Besides lunar activity, several significant astronomical events are predicted. A total solar eclipse on August 12th will begin in the Arctic and pass over Greenland, Iceland, and Spain, offering a totality period of two minutes and 18 seconds. A ring-of-fire eclipse in the Antarctic on February 17th will precede this, with partial viewing available in South Africa, Chile, and Argentina. A total lunar eclipse will follow the ring of fire eclipse in February with a partial lunar eclipse concluding the event in late August. Furthermore, nearly all the planets will appear aligned in the sky around February 28th, presenting a spectacular sight. Mercury, Venus, Jupiter, and Saturn will be visible to the naked eye, while Uranus and Neptune may require binoculars or telescopes. The night sky will also be illuminated by three supermoons in 2026. The supermoons are the result of a full moon appearing closer to Earth than usual. The first supermoon will coincide with a meteor shower in January. The other supermoons will be in November and on Christmas Eve, when the closest one will occur. The sun will churn out more eruptions in 2026, leading to geomagnetic storms on Earth which will lead to stunning auroras, though the 11-year solar cycle will enter its downslide in the long run
