ALDOT warns of hazardous black ice conditions on state roadways, urging drivers to exercise extreme caution and adjust driving habits accordingly.

The Alabama Department of Transportation ( ALDOT ) is warning drivers to exercise extreme caution Wednesday morning due to the potential for dangerous black ice on state roadways. Black ice, a thin and nearly invisible layer of ice, can create extremely treacherous driving conditions, significantly increasing the risk of accidents.

While ALDOT crews are diligently working to clear snow and apply de-icing agents to bridges and roadways, icy patches may still persist on surfaces that appear passable. ALDOT advises motorists to reduce their speed and increase their following distance, allowing ample space for braking. Drivers are also urged to plan for additional travel time to reach their destinations. To enhance visibility, it's recommended to use headlights, even during daylight hours. In the event of a minor crash, if possible, safely move vehicles off the roadway to ensure unobstructed access for emergency responders and medical personnel. It is crucial to avoid abandoning vehicles in travel lanes. ALDOT's North Region, encompassing Autauga, Barbour, Bullock, Butler, Coffee, Covington, Crenshaw, Dale, Dallas, Elmore, Henry, Houston, Geneva, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Pike, and Russell counties, is particularly affected by this weather advisory.
