More than a dozen people entered the U.S. illegally Saturday morning when a powerboat arrived on a Carlsbad, Calif. beach,to San Diego County Supervisor Jim Desmond, R-District 5. Videos show the migrants jumping out of the boat and into waiting SUVs. "We need harsher penalties on human smugglers," Supervisor Desmond said during a Monday press conference. "We need state and federal officials to bring more resources, whether it's most Coast Guard or National Guard.""My real concern is human trafficking," Carlsbad Mayor Keith BlackburnCBS8.
Carlsbad, which sits about 45 minutes north of San Diego, has long opposed efforts by California lawmakers to become a sanctuary for individuals who have entered the U.S. illegally. The Carlsbad City Council voted in 2018 to back a Trump administration lawsuit against California over Senate Bill 54, commonly referred to as the "sanctuary law," which restricts local law enforcement from acting on behalf of federal immigration officials.
