Browns DC Jim Schwartz gets a request from the Ravens for their head coach vacancy.

On Monday, he received a request from the Ravens to interview for their head coach vacancy, his second such opportunity this cycle. Schwartz, 59, interviewed for the Browns head coach vacancy on Thursday.

He was their second interview for the job, behind Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, who interviewed earlier that day. His former boss, Kevin Stefanski, fired by the Browns the day after the season, has also interview for the Ravens job to replace John Harbaugh. Harbaugh, conversely, is on the Browns’ radar for their head coach job, and may interview with them this week. He and the Browns have done their diligence to see if it’s a fit. The Browns, meanwhile, have stated that they’d love to have Schwartz, architect of their dominant 2025 defense, remain with the team, either as head coach or coordinator. Browns owner Jimmy Haslam said “absolutely” they want to retain Schwartz. “He’s a great coach,” he said. He certainly has the endorsement of his defensive players, who helped the unit finish fourth in the NFL this season in yards allowed. “Me personally, I have so much love and respect for Coach Schwartz,” Pro Bowl cornerback Denzel Ward said Jan. 5 on locker cleanout day. “Me, I would highly recommend Coach Schwartz for a head coaching job here, definitely. “He’s a great coach. He’s helped my game tremendously, puts us in great positions, great leader. I can’t say enough great things about him, but I think he’s a guy that who you want in a coach and somebody to lead a team. And yeah, I know he’s a guy, he’s a great guy.” If Schwartz lands the Ravens job, he’ll return to his hometown and also to the NFL team that gave him his first start in coaching. After breaking into the NFL as an unpaid scout here under then-Browns coach Bill Belichick in 1993, Schwartz moved with the team to Baltimore in 1996, where he served as a defensive assistant through 1998. He also served in that capacity with the Titans in 1999, working his way up to Titans defensive coordinator from 2001-08. During 10 seasons with Tennessee from 1999-2008, the Titans appeared in Super Bowl XXXIV, played in two AFC Championship games, captured three division titles and earned six playoff berths. In 2008, the Titans produced a league-best 13-3 regular season record, and Schwartz parlayed that success into a head coach job with the Lions from 2009-13. Taking over an 0-16 season team, he coached the Lions to a 10-6 record in 2011, marking Detroit’s first postseason appearance since 1999. In 2011, the Lions defense led the NFL and set a franchise record with seven return touchdowns . Defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh earned first team All-Pro honors twice and was selected to two Pro Bowls, while DT Nick Fairley also earned Pro Bowl honors. WR Calvin Johnson set an NFL record with 1,964 receiving yards in 2012. He went on to serve as coordinator for the Bills in 2014, and the Eagles, from 2016-2020, where he helped the team win a Super Bowl after the 2017 season with his dominant, attack-minded scheme. There, he spent the 2019 season with Browns GM Andrew Berry, who was Eagles vice president of football operations. Schwartz stepped away from the Eagles to deal with a thyroid issue after the 2020 season, but quickly joined the Titans as a senior defensive assistant under Mike Vrabel in 2021-22, and was hired by the Browns as defensive coordinator in 2023. In his first year here, he led the Browns a No. 1 ranking in yards allowed and helped the Browns to an 11-6 record and wild card berth. He earned AP NFL Assistant Coach of the Year for his efforts. He’s also coached Myles Garrett to what will soon be two NFL Defensive Player of the Year awards, one in 2023, and one this season. The Browns would love to keep him and have made that known to their coaching candidates, who will have the authority to hire their own staff. But if they hire a defensive-minded head coach, especially one with a different philosophy than Schwartz, the parties that be will have to decide if it’s a fit.Can the Browns land John Harbaugh?
