The Blue Jackets made multiple coaching moves on Monday.
The firings come a day after the Blue Jackets won at Utah, 3-2, to prevent an 0-4 road trip. But Columbus sits in last place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 19-19-7 and 45 points. They are seven points out of a playoff spot.
Evason had been hired as head coach prior to the 2024-25 season and led one of the biggest surprises in the NHL. But in his five seasons, Columbus has never been higher than 25th in goals against. “This season has been a frustrating one for all of us and the bottom line is we are not performing at a level that meets our expectations. We all share in that responsibility, me included, and while this was not a decision that was made lightly, it is one that needed to be made at this time,” Blue Jackets president and general manager Don Waddell said in a release announcing the news. “Dean did a tremendous job last year under extremely difficult circumstances and I thank him for that. I also want to thank Steve for his commitment to our club over the past five years.” The 70-year-old Bowness has had multiple stops as a head coach, most recently coaching the Stars from 2019-20 to 2021-22, and the Jets from 22-23 to 23-24.
