The Brahmas erased a nine-point deficit in the final three minutes but could not prevail in overtime, moving to the brink of playoff elimination.
SAN ANTONIO, TX - MARCH 19: San Antonio Brahmas QB Jack Coan runs for yardage during the XFL game featuring the Arlington Renegades and the San Antonio Brahmas on March 19, 2023 at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX. With San Antonio’s offense floundering and many of the fans heading for the exits, safety Kameron Kelly pulled in an interception to give the Brahmas a final shot.
San Antonio still has an outside shot at sneaking into the postseason with wins in its final two games against Orlando on Saturday and D.C. on April 22, both in the Alamodome. The Brahmas would also need the Arlington Renegades to lose their final two games at D.C. and at home against Houston, which would give San Antonio a chance to pull through on a strength of victory tiebreaker.
During the week of practice leading to Sunday, Brahmas coach Hines Ward stressed communication and ironing out mental errors, but both aspects proved costly on Sunday. San Antonio bested its league-worst averages of 73.3 rushing yards and 131.9 passing yards per game entering Sunday, gaining 190 yards through the air and 128 on the ground.
But Houston went 3-for-3 on third down during Sunday’s first possession, driving 70 yards to set up a 3-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Silvers to Deontay Burnett for a 6-0 lead.
