The XB-1 supersonic demonstrator aircraft recently completed its 11th successful test flight, reaching a sustained speed of 728 mph (1,172 km/h) — equivalent to Mach 0.95. This test was conducted at a lower altitude of 29,481 feet (8,986 meters) compared to the 10th test, which also reached Mach 0.

According to company representatives, the aircraft will never face such intense conditions again, even when it eventually breaks the sound barrier, as its in-service flights will take place at much higher altitudes where the air is thinner.The company emphasized that subjecting the aircraft to this strain at transonic speeds, just below the speed of sound, demonstrates the robust quality of its airframe and proves its controllability at higher speeds. Boom Supersonic previously stated its goal of achieving and exceeding Mach 1 speeds in early 2025. Depending on the need for a 12th test flight, the company is on track to meet this target. Subsequent flights have focused on exploring the aircraft's stability with and without its digital handling system, stress-testing its frame using a device that simulates the disruptive energy caused by airflow at high velocity, and pushing it to ever-faster maximum speeds. The company's next steps involve incrementally expanding the XB-1's operational envelope in terms of altitude, airspeed, and Mach number until it inevitably makes that sonic boom. Boom Supersonic's CEO, Blake Scholl, highlighted the importance of a gradual approach, stating that while autonomous aircraft can be tested more rapidly, the XB-1 has a human pilot onboard. If launched successfully, the Boom Overture could carry 64 to 80 passengers on transatlantic journeys that will take just 3 hours and 30 minutes between London and Newark
