The aircraft reached a sustained speed of Mach 0.95, equivalent to 728 mph (1,172 km/h), at a lower altitude than previous tests, demonstrating its capability to withstand intense air pressure conditions. Boom Supersonic, the company striving to bring back the supersonic passenger experience, has achieved another milestone in its quest to make high-speed travel a reality. The XB-1 , an experimental supersonic demonstrator aircraft, recently completed its 11th successful test flight, reaching a sustained speed of 728 mph (1,172 km/h) — equivalent to Mach 0.95.
This test marked a significant advancement as it was conducted at a lower altitude of 29,481 feet (8,986 meters) compared to previous flights at Mach 0.95, which occurred at higher altitudes. By flying at this speed and lower altitude, the XB-1 achieved a record 383 knots equivalent airspeed, demonstrating the aircraft's ability to withstand intense dynamic air pressure.The company emphasized that the aircraft will not encounter such extreme conditions during regular service flights, which will take place at higher altitudes where the air density is thinner. This controlled test at transonic speeds, just below the speed of sound, validated the strength and controllability of the XB-1's airframe at higher speeds. Boom Supersonic has previously stated its intention to reach and surpass Mach 1 speeds by early 2025, and based on the progress of the test program, the target remains feasible. Depending on the need for a 12th test flight, the company is on track to meet this ambitious goal.This latest test flight builds upon a series of previous successful demonstrations. Since the commencement of test flights in March 2024, the XB-1 has undergone rigorous evaluations, including assessments of its stability with and without its distinctive wing design. The aircraft has also undergone stress testing to simulate the forces generated by high-velocity airflow, pushing its structural limits. The company's focus in the coming months will be on progressively expanding the XB-1's operational envelope, incrementally increasing altitude, airspeed, and Mach number until it eventually surpasses the sound barrier. Boom Supersonic's ultimate goal is to bring its commercial supersonic aircraft, the Boom Overture, to market. This aircraft, capable of carrying 64 to 80 passengers, is designed to revolutionize transatlantic travel, reducing journey times between major cities like London and Newark to just 3 hours and 30 minutes.
