Boom Supersonic's XB-1 prototype reached a transonic speed of Mach 0.95 during a recent test flight, bringing the company closer to its goal of reviving supersonic commercial air travel. The test, conducted in the Mojave Desert, saw the aircraft reach an altitude of 29,481 ft and experience the highest dynamic pressure it will ever encounter. Boom aims to achieve supersonic speeds with its commercial Overture aircraft, offering significantly reduced flight times compared to conventional air travel.
Boom Supersonic is one step closer to launching the spiritual heir to the Concorde . The US firm’s XB-1 prototype reached a transonic speed of Mach 0.95 during Test Flight 11 on January 10, 2025. The test took place over the Mojave Desert in California.Boom Supersonic was founded in 2014. Its mission is to fly commercial passengers at a speed of Mach 2.2. This will allow massively reduced flight times, such as New York to London in roughly three hours.
” The XB-1 is smaller than the company’s ‘Overture’ aircraft, which will fly commercial passengers. It was designed to test the company’s technology.Boom to break sound barrier in early 2025In its statement, Boom says XB-1 was subjected to a maximum dynamic pressure of 383 Knots Equivalent Air Speed . This was the primary objective of the test flight and it is a greater pressure than the aircraft would experience flying at Mach 1.1.
