Enough consumers still enjoy holiday shopping in person that Black Friday remains the biggest day of the year for retail foot traffic in the U.S.

Melonie Paige was back at the mall for Black Friday for the first time in years, dragged into it by her daughter’s hunt for a sought-after bracelet. She wasn’t alone. San Antonio stores and malls were buzzing on the day long considered the official kickoff of the holiday shopping season. But it wasn’t like years past, when long lines of shoppers on the pre-dawn quest for deals were part of Christmas tradition.

Black Friday traffic: San Marcos will close I-35 exits by outlet malls “Most retailers are thinking of it as essentially Black November now,” said Thomas McMillan, director of the Center for Retailing Studies at Texas A&M University. “We know shoppers are shopping all of November and December … we’re going to see people spend all the way up until Christmas.” The extended shopping period is helping push sales to an expected record this year.
