The Illini are looking forward after punching their ticket to the Final Four – their first in over two decades. Kacy Standohar reports. Legendary actor Bill Murray is one of the most famous Chicago sports fans of all time, but he likely won’t be rooting on his home state team at the Final Four.

Murray, who was born in Evanston and has become renowned for his support of the Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks, was not in the stands on Saturday as Illinois beat Iowa in the Elite Eight in Houston, punching their ticket to a Final Four appearance for the first time since 2005.Instead, Murray was in Washington, D.C. as UConn stormed back from 19 points down to stun Duke with a buzzer-beating three-pointer to secure the East Region title on Sunday. But why was Murray cheering on the Huskies instead of the Illini? The reason is a matter of family pride. That’s because Murray’s son Luke is an assistant coach at UConn, and he was a key piece of the coaching staff that led the Huskies back to the Final Four for the second time in three seasons. Murray was seen on the television broadcast going absolutely wild during the Huskies’ remarkable comeback. For those curious, Murray was in attendance the last time the two teams played in the NCAA tournament, a UConn rout over Illinois in the 2024 Elite Eight. The Huskies and Illini will square off Saturday in the Final Four at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium, with tip-off scheduled for 5:09 p.m. Central time on TBS.
