Instead of being a Karate Kid-like personal journey of growth and acceptance, the film quickly devolves into a hellish, dryly comedic outing, with abuse coming to our protagonist in the form of physical and emotional damage. Stearns successfully balances deeply upsetting and violent tones but finds the humor and fun in the sport of karate.
