How Canadian high-schooler Iman Vellani went from being a fan of the Marvel universe to joining it
As the end of a how-I-got-cast anecdote, it doesn’t seem like something Meryl Streep or Daniel Day-Lewis would say. But it feels just right coming from Iman Vellani, the 19-year-old star of the newest Marvel project, Disney’s six-partIt was the very last day of high school. “Which is like the perfect graduation present,” she recalls. “And my friends were watching me get this part and they did not know I had auditioned.
Vellani might just be the perfect woman for the part. She’s certainly the hometown favourite, joining Simu Liu in the ranks of Canadians to score a major Marvel role. Born in Pakistan to Muslim parents, she moved to Canada when she was a baby, and graduated from Unionville High School, an arts-focused institution whose alumni include Hayden Christensen and Emmanuelle Chriqui.Article contentThe character of Ms.
Is she worried about fan reaction — or rather the toxic, non-fan reaction that seems to flare up sometimes around strong female roles? “I am pretty sheltered from the media,” she says. “I’m not on social media at all. But honestly, I think our show is good. And I really do think that the work is going to speak for itself. And the most important thing for me was to stay true to the comics. And I think we’ve done that.
